We are currently working a new addition to Character Creations that will let you move items around more easily, once you have moved them over to your character.

This will be a popup box with arrows for movement and a list of all the items you have added. So you select say “eyes” and then use the arrows to make fine adjustments to the eyes etc… Hopefully you will also be able to select the whole character and be able to move it left, right, up and down.

This is more needed on the iPhone and iPod version rather than the iPad, due to the smaller screen size.

Here are some of the Frameworks we have come across so far.

App Inventor – This is for Android only and I think created by Google.

Mono – There seems to be 2 version of this software, 1 for iOS and 1 for Android. What I like about the look of this you can use ASP.Net code to develop iOS apps.

GameSalad – This is for iOS and I think Mac games (also Android with the professional version). Had a little play with this and it looks really good. There is no programming knowledge needed for GameSalad, it’s more of a package you have to learn.

Unity 3D – A game development engine for loads of different platforms. Unity uses 3 different languages (you can choose any), JavaScript, C# or Boo. I have actually purchased games from the App Store on my iPad that have been coded in Unity.

Titanium – Not quite sure what this is and website offers no help at all. It looks like a IDE for developing mobile apps but that’s all I know so far. Think the language used is JavaScript.

Corona – This is what we are using at the moment. Language used is Lua and so far we are finding it really good.

Gideros Mobile – Language used is Lua and looks like it’s FREE if you don’t mind a splash screen before your app loads.

Moai – Also uses Lua as the scripting language. Again this FREE to start with and then you can upgrade to a pay monthly package.

Kobold 2D – Also uses Lua as the scripting language. This is FREE as far as we can see as there is no mention of prices.

Monkey Coder – Monkey has a choice of languages to use c++, c#, Java, JavaScript or ActionScript. You can targets lots of devices with Monkey OS X, Windows, HTML 5, iOS, Android and XNA. There is a FREE demo version and the full paid version is $120.

Lime JS , Impact JS – These are both HTML 5 game frameworks, so you develop the game in HTML 5 and it will run in a browser but you can run a convertor on it to convert it to a full iOS app and submit it to the App Store.

jQTouch – This is a mobile framework based on jQuery. Looks really good and you can browse to the example site on your mobile device to have a play.

jQuery Mobile – Another mobile framework based on jQuery.

There are probably loads more we haven’t even found yet.

Really struggling with the marketing side of our app. We have showed it to a few people and they think it’s great and should do well if we can get it in front of the right people. But that is the problem we are having.

We have submitted the app to about 20 app review sites and every single one of the want money for a review. They say you don’t have to pay but they can’t review every app that gets submitted. In other words, if you don’t pay, you ain’t getting a review.

The paid for version has had about 200 downloads and the free version about 3500 but we haven’t seen a increase in sales from downloads of the free version. So either people don’t want to pay, our app is crap, the wrong people are downloading it or the upgrade button doesn’t work!

We have had the description converted to Chinese and will be submitting that with our next update (don’t know you have to submit a app update to add another language for iTunes), so hopefully that will generate some sales in China.

Free version of Character Creations is now on the App Store. It is for iPad only and only has two characters available. This free version will not be getting any new characters, only the paid for version will be getting a new character every month.

We decided to do a free version to try and get some exposure for the app and after 2 days we had 2500 downloads. Still no reviews and the free version does remind you to review the app every 5 times you load the app (unless you click ‘Never’ on the prompt message).

As we said in our last post we borrowed money for the iOS license, well borrowed enough to get the iOS license for Corona as well.

We slowly started working through the samples and playing with stuff and reading all about LUA. Corona is a great SDK and the support forums are brilliant.

We now have a idea for a app so we are just gonna dive straight in, as we find it the best way to learn.

One thing with Corona is that there is no IDE, so you have to use your own text editor or the one that comes with Xcode. Corona is a simulator and parser, so you code in LUA and it runs in the simulator. You can then build your app and use Xcode to copy it over to your iOS device.
